Saif Ali Khan’s comedy of errors Jawaani Jaaneman has made a total of Rs 16.80 crore at the Indian box office in five days. The film garnered Rs 1.94 crore on Tuesday. As per reports from trade analysts, the slice-of-life flick has performed well in national multiplexes in the northern sections of India.
Jawaani Jaaneman is faring well as compared to Saif Ali Khan’s past solo releases Chef, Kaalakaandi, Bazaar, and Laal Kaptaan. Saif’s other film, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, featuring Ajay Devgn in the lead, has been having a dream run at the ticketing counters ever since its release in January. The period drama, also featuring Kajol, has made a total of Rs 255.77 crore in its fourth week.
Charting the story of an estranged father-daughter duo who come together after she hunts him down, Jawaani Jaaneman is directed by Nitin Kakkar. The narrative follows a middle-aged man Jasswinder ‘Jazz’ Kapoor (Khan), who has not come to terms with his age and shirks at the mention of responsibility. His life takes a dramatic turn when Alaya F’s character Tia finds him in an alley, and tells him there is a possibility he is her father. Tabu, Kumud Mishra, Kubra Sait, and Farida Jalal are also part of the cast.
Ajay Devgn’s historical drama Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior refuses to slow down at the box office. The film which opened Rs 15.10 crore on its opening day, managed to enter the Rs 100 crore club on the sixth day of its release. In its second week, Tanhaji has earned Rs 22.12 crore on Sunday, with a boost of Rs 8.17 crore on Monday, and Rs 7.72 crore on Tuesday, bringing its total collection to Rs 183.34 crore. Trade experts note that the epic drama will be Devgn’s second film to cross Rs 200 crore milestone after Golmaal Again.
Bollywood Hungama notes Tanhaji has surpassed the lifetime collection of Devgn’s previous films — De De Pyaar De (2019) and Raid (2018). For Saif Ali Khan, who plays antagonist Uday Bhan Singh, Tanhaji earnings are higher than his last commercial hit Race 2 (2013).
Featuring Ajay Devgn as Maratha warrior Subedar Tanaji Malusare, the Om Raut directorial charts the heroic character’s journey through the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670 AD.
The Uttar Pradesh government recently declared the film tax-free in the state. The announcement was made by the official Twitter account of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s office. The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to make Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior tax-free in the state.
While Tanhaji continues to soar, its subsequent release Chhapaak has taken a beating at the office. Meghna Gulzar’s film based on the story of an acid-attack victim Laxmi Agarwal was widely appreciated by the viewers, but failed to create a dent at the box office.
According to Livemint, the film’s theatrical business remains underwhelming with the Deepika Padukone-starrer crashing further over its second weekend, having made Rs 29.25 crore at last count. Despite no major release around last week, the film’s total collection on Monday stood at Rs 32.48 crore.
Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor’s Street Dancer 3D performed well on the first day of its release. The movie, directed by choreographer-turned-director Remo D’Souza, has earned Rs 10.26 crore. It released alongside Kangana Ranaut’s film Panga, which has earned Rs 2.70 crore at the box office.
Trade analysts have said that film’s business has been affected in Mumbai because of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’s dominance at the ticketing counters. The period drama, featuring Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan and Kajol in the lead, released on 10 January along with Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak and has since been trending at the box office. Tanhaji has now surpassed the Rs 200-crore mark.
Street Dancer 3D portrays Dhawan as an Indian dancer, and Shraddha Kapoor as a performer from Pakistan. Shakti Mohan, Aparkshakti Khurana, and Nora feature in supporting roles. Mohan will make her Bollywood debut with the film.
While Street Dancer 3D has been dubbed “India’s biggest dance film,” director Remo D’Souza had clarified the movie is unrelated to his other directorial, the ABCD franchise. He said to Mid-Day, “This is completely different from the earlier franchise. Although we are exploring different forms of dance, including jazz and contemporary, when these dance forms are incorporated on the street, they become completely different.”
Ayushmann Khurrana, who had a successful year so far, might deliver yet another Rs. 100-crore club blockbuster with Bala. Trade analysts note that Amar Kaushik’s Bala is set to become Khurrana’s third film to enter Rs.100 crore club. In its first week, the film had paced fast to reach the Rs.50 crore mark.
During its Week 3 run, Bala raked Rs. 3.76 crore on Friday, Rs. 6.73 crore on Saturday and Rs.8.01 crore was added in the earnings. Along with Bala’s first week collection, which tallies at Rs. 69.25 crore, the film’s grand total currently stands at Rs.90.74 crore.
Bala has become Ayushmann Khurrana’s third film, after Badhaai Ho and Dream Girl, to cross the Rs 40 crore mark in opening weekend earnings. While the film serves as Khurrana and Yami Gautam’s third film to enter the coveted Rs.100 crore club, it will be second 100 crore grosser for Bhumi Pednekar.
While Khurrana battles premature balding, Pednekar plays a dusky complexioned girl combating prejudice coming her way. Gautam is seen as a local Tik-Tok celebrity, whom Khurrana’s character courts and eventually marries. Saurabh Shukla, Jaaved Jaaferi, Seema Pahwa, and Abhishek Banerjee too are part of the film.
In a recent interview with Press Trust of India, Khurrana called Bala the “most precious” films he has been a part of so far. “I’m humbled with the response and delighted that I have again backed a film that has its heart at the right place,” he added.
Chuck Russell’s Hindi directorial debut, Junglee, picked up pace on the third day of its release. Starring Vidyut Jammwal in the lead, the film minted Rs 4.45 crore on Saturday (30 March) and Rs 6.05 crore on Sunday after opening with Rs 3.35 crore on Friday. The film’s opening weekend collection stands at Rs 13.85 crore.
Despite the buzz surrounding Junglee, the adventure-action flick has underperformed at the box office. Trade analysts opine that if the film continues its upward trend in the next few days, it will be able to recover its lost ground. The film has however performed well inthe mass circuits.
Junglee tells the unique tale of a friendship between a man and a herd of elephants. Jammwal, who made a breakthrough debut as an antagonist in the John Abraham-starrer 2011 action drama Force, plays Ashwath. His character confronts an international poacher’s racket at an elephant reserve. Jammwal was last seen in Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi’s Baadshaho.
Junglee also stars Pooja Sawant, Asha Bhat, Akshay Oberoi and Atul Kulkarni. It has been produced by Vineet Jain and co-produced by Priti Shahani.
Batti Gul Meter Chalu, despite featuring a prominent cast comprising Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam, had a slow start at the box office, earning Rs 6.76 crores on its opening day.
The film released alongside Manto, Saamy Square and The Equalizer 2. Trade analyst Girish Johar had predicted that the film would be able to amass Rs 5.5 crores on its first day. “Desi stories always connect well with people. Also, a social issue relating to a common man’s fight against power distribution companies will pull audiences to cinema halls,” Johar had told The Indian Express in a statement, adding that a combination of good cast and director increases the possibility of a positive box office outcome. Meanwhile, Shraddha’s other release, Amar Kaushik’s Stree where the actress features alongside Rajkummar Rao, has been steady at the box office, even after three weeks of its release.
The weekend seemed to get better and better for the Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor starrer 102 Not Out, which recorded a total gross of Rs 16.65 crore in its opening weekend.
The film, directed by Umang Shukla of Oh My God! fame, refused to be bullied by Avengers: Infinity War even though the Marvel blockbuster continued to muscle rivals aside at the global box office.
102 Not Out raked in Rs 3.52 cr on Friday, Rs 5.53 cr on Saturday and Rs 7.60 cr on Sunday, reports trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Billed as the most unusual father-son story, 102 Not Out is based on playwright Saumya Joshi’s popular Gujarati play of the same name.

The film portrays the relationship between a 102-year-old man (Bachchan) and his 75-year-old son (Kapoor). Bachchan’s centenarian wants to break the world record of being the oldest man alive, which is held by a 118-year-old Chinese man. He plans to do it by putting his son in an old age home.
102 Not Out is produced by SPE Films India and Treetop Entertainment.
The actor duo, who have worked together in films such as Amar Akbar Anthony, Kabhi Kabhie, Naseeb and Coolie, reunite on screen after 26 years.
Shah Rukh Khan has proved yet again, his penchant for making a solid opening at the box office with his latest release Raees.
Raees, directed by Rahul Dholakia and produced by Excel Entertainment and Red Chillies, was expected to take in anything between Rs 17-19 crores in box office collections when it opened on Wednesday, 25 January 2017.
The predictions seemed in line with SRK’s previous releases — Fan (which brought in Rs 19 crores on opening day) and Dilwale (which had a Rs 21 crore opening).
As per early reports, which have taken into consideration the screen count (approximately 2,600) and occupancy levels (reported to be around 60 percent through the day), the Day 1 box office collection has been estimated at Rs 21 crore.
Trade observer Ramesh Bala tweeted out the early figures: “Looking at the early day one numbers, Raees seems to have outdone Kaabil by a huge margin at the box office: Raees — Rs 21 crore; Kaabil — Rs 7.5 crore.
1 figures for Raees at Rs. 20.5 crore, stating: “Considering the fact that Wednesday was a regular working day with the only advantage being the big holiday on Thursday (Republic Day), due to which evening and night shows were better than normal, Raees has clearly taken a very positive start at the box office.”
While official figures are still awaited, it is Day 2 figures for both Raees and Kaabil that will be keenly watched. It remains to be seen how much the public holiday will benefit the business of both films.
The stakes were high for Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil, when it opened in theatres across the world on Wednesday, 25 January.
Not only is this a home production for the Roshans, it was also a chance for both director Sanjay Gupta (whose last film Jazbaa was not a success) and Hrithik (who had a box office debacle in Mohenjo Daro on his hands in 2016) to redeem themselves.
To complicate matters further, there was the high-profile clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s mass entertainer Raees that was bound to eat into the business Kaabil expected to do.
On opening day, Raees raced ahead with a Rs 21 crore opening — as expected for the SRK starrer.
On the other hand, Kaabil scored a Rs 10.43 crore box office collection on Day 1.
An official statement released by the Kaabil team read: “Kaabil opened to 40 percent theatre share in multiplexes as well as a smaller share of the single screens yesterday. It collected Rs 10.43 crore on Day One… The film is expected to grow exponentially over the Republic Day weekend on the strength of the positive audience reactions.”
Trade website Bollywood Hungama reported that Kaabil‘s Rs 10+ crore opening has made it among Hrithik’s top-five day one earners, providing these figures for his films and their respective day 1 box office collections:
Bang Bang: Rs 27.54 crore
Agneepath: Rs 23 crore
Krrish 3: Rs 19 crore
Kaabil: Rs 10.43 crore
Kites: Rs 10 crore
Mohenjo Daro: Rs. 8.87 crore
As with Raees, the Republic Day public holiday and subsequent weekend will prove to be crucial for Kaabil‘s business as well.
